The basics

What does Backbrain actually do?

It reminds you to take medication and gives one trusted person a way to check in on you when you miss a dose. The condition that makes you forget things is treated by a pill you have to remember to take. Backbrain is the back-up.

Who is Backbrain for?

Anyone who takes medication daily and wants something simple. We designed it with ADHD adults in mind because that is who needs it most, but it works for any medication routine.

Is Backbrain a medical device?

No. It is a habit-support tool. It does not give medical advice and it is not a substitute for your prescribing clinician.

The backbrain partner

What does the partner actually see?

One push notification when you miss a dose: "[Your name] missed a dose. Check in on them?" That is it. No medication name. No streaks. No history. They text or call from there. Off-platform.

How do I pair with someone?

Settings → Backbrain partner → Add a backbrain. You get an eight-character code. Send it to the person you trust via Messages. They open Backbrain on their phone, tap "I have a code", paste it, accept. Done.

Does my partner need to pay?

No. The person being a backbrain installs Backbrain free and never pays. The Pro subscription is for the user being supported.

What if my partner does not have an iPhone?

For now Backbrain is iOS only. Android is on the roadmap.

Can I end a partnership?

Yes, either party can end the partnership at any time. The other person gets a polite notification: "[Name] has ended your partnership." No drama.

What if my partner cancels their part?

Same flow. You get a polite notification. You can pair with someone new whenever you are ready.

Privacy

Where is my medication data stored?

On your device. Only on your device. We never see it. Our servers cannot see it. Even our Cloud Function that fires the partner alert cannot see it.

Then how do partner alerts work?

Your phone detects locally that the reminder window passed without a log. It writes a small server doc that contains: your user id, the partner's user id, optionally your name. It does not contain the medication. The Cloud Function dispatches a push to your partner.

Do you sell my data?

No. We do not have analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or trackers. Subscription handling goes through Apple and RevenueCat, both of whom we contractually cannot use beyond billing.

Subscriptions

How much does Backbrain cost?

Free for one medication, with full reminder windows, streaks, on-time stats and history. Pro is US$24.99 per year for unlimited medications, the partner feature and the subscription statement export. Family is US$39.99 per year for everything in Pro plus household profiles, up to four partners and the ability to sponsor family members onto Pro features.

Why a subscription?

Backbrain costs money to run. Server, push delivery, Apple developer account, ongoing improvements. A subscription means we keep the lights on without stuffing your phone with ads or selling data.

How do I cancel?

Settings app on your phone → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → Backbrain → Cancel. Your access continues until the end of the paid period.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store subscriptions are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com or contact Apple Support.

Do you offer NDIS or HSA documentation?

For Australian users, Backbrain generates a Subscription Statement (with our ABN) confirming your subscription with the service provider. It's scheme-agnostic, so you map it to whatever reimbursement scheme applies — NDIS, private health, professional association. Find it at Settings → Subscription statement. For users outside Australia, Apple's email receipt is the document most reimbursement schemes accept and you do not need anything from us.

Devices and reminders

What devices does Backbrain work on?

iPhone running iOS 13 or later. Android coming later in 2026.

Will it work on Apple Watch?

Notifications relay to your Watch out of the box. A native Watch app is on the longer-term list.

What if my reminder does not fire?

Check Settings → Notifications → Backbrain on your phone, make sure notifications are allowed and the focus mode is not silencing them. If it still does not fire, write to support.

Can I change the reminder window?

Yes. Per medication. Settings → Medications → tap the one you want → Reminder window. Default 30 minutes.

Account

Why do I have an "anonymous" user by default?

Backbrain works without an account so you can start in 30 seconds. Anonymous means we have a unique id for your install but no email, name, or password. You never need to sign in. Apple Sign-In is offered as an option if you want a way to recover your partnerships on a new phone, but for everything else iCloud Backup covers it.

What happens if I delete the app?

If your phone has iCloud Backup enabled (the default for most people), your medications and history are part of that backup automatically — reinstall Backbrain after restoring from iCloud Backup and the data comes back. Without iCloud Backup, deleting the app loses the local data. Apple Sign-In does not affect this either way; it only governs whether your Firebase identity and partnerships come back across devices.

What happens if I sign out?

Your medications and dose history stay on the device. Signing out only disconnects your Apple identity from this install. To wipe everything, use Settings → Profile → Delete account.

How do I delete my account?

Settings → Profile → Delete account. This permanently removes your Backbrain account, ends any active partnership, wipes your medications and history from this device. App Store policy requires this option.
